The discipline of an open philosophy

The
Limits

A philosophy earns trust not only by what it can say—

but by knowing what it
cannot claim.

Approach the boundary

Restraint is not retreat.

00 — WHY LIMITS MATTER

Intellectual honesty

The unknown is
not an empty space
to colonise.

An open question creates two equal temptations. We can close it too quickly in the name of certainty. Or we can fill it with whatever gives us comfort and call the result insight.

The New Metaphysics refuses both. It will not declare reality complete merely because one vocabulary is successful. It will not turn the limits of that vocabulary into evidence for another world.

We will not close a question
to look rigorous.
We will not fill it to feel safe.

01 — THE NEGATIVE SPACE

What this project
does not claim.

These are not cautious footnotes. They define the architecture of the inquiry.

01

Experience is all that exists

Experience is where knowing begins. That does not prove that reality is made only of experience.

02

Physics is false or merely an illusion

Physics reveals stable relations with unmatched precision. The open question is whether relational description exhausts being.

03

The brain is irrelevant—or only a receiver

Human experience depends profoundly on the living brain and body. The nature of that dependence remains a question, not a licence for a preferred metaphor.

04

Quantum theory explains consciousness

No appeal to observation, indeterminacy or entanglement is used as a shortcut across the explanatory gap.

05

S is a hidden substance or mechanism

S has no borrowed properties. It marks a boundary question and must not become a container for whatever we wish to preserve.

06

A personal perspective survives death

The framework offers no evidence of continuation after bodily death. Logical openness is not probability, and possibility is not a promise.

07

Reality has a purpose designed for us

We do not know whether purpose belongs to reality as a whole. Lived meaning does not require us to pretend that we do.

08

Subjective conviction outranks evidence

An experience may be profound without making its interpretation true. Intensity is not an epistemic status.

02 — WHAT REMAINS OPEN

Precision without closure

A limit is not
the end of inquiry.

To withhold a conclusion is not to say that every answer is equally plausible. It is to keep the strength of each claim proportional to what supports it.

01

Experience and brain

What constrains us

We know that changes in the brain alter human experience.

What remains open

We do not yet know why any physical process is present as something lived—or whether our current categories formulate that relation correctly.

02

Structure and presence

What constrains us

Science can model relations, dependencies and transformations with extraordinary success.

What remains open

Whether a complete structural description is identical with presence itself remains a philosophical question, not an empirical result already secured.

03

Death and continuation

What constrains us

No reliable evidence establishes that an individual perspective continues after irreversible brain death.

What remains open

Our metaphysics is also not complete enough to turn absence of evidence into knowledge of ultimate impossibility. The honest answer remains: we do not know.

04

Meaning

What constrains us

We cannot demonstrate a cosmic intention prepared in advance for each life.

What remains open

We can know that suffering and relief, isolation and relationship, destruction and creation are not interchangeable within experience. Consequences make differences matter.

03 — Hope under discipline

Possibility is not
a promise.

Some open questions matter because our lives are inside them. Whether consciousness is exhausted by its present biological form; whether anything of a perspective can persist; whether reality contains meaning deeper than the meanings we create—these are not emotionally neutral questions.

Intellectual honesty does not require us to destroy hope in order to appear serious. It requires us to stop hope from impersonating knowledge.

Hope may inhabit the open.
It may not claim to have measured it.

The project therefore preserves possibility without assigning it probability, mechanism or promise.

04 — THE SCIENTIFIC BOUNDARY

Science is not
the opponent of
the mystery.

Science is the most reliable method we have for discovering the stable relations of W. It disciplines intuition, exposes claims to failure and allows perspectives to converge on results no individual controls.

The New Metaphysics does not compete with this work. It asks a question at its conceptual edge: whether a complete account of relations is thereby a complete account of reality—and why any part of that reality is present as experience.

THE RULE

Never use a gap in science as evidence for a preferred metaphysics. Never use the success of science to pretend that every philosophical question has already been answered.

05 — CONDITIONS OF REVISION

A living inquiry must
be able to lose.

A theory protected from correction has ceased to be inquiry. The framework remains useful only while it remains answerable to what it encounters.

01

Evidence

If evidence resists the framework, the framework changes.

02

Concepts

If a symbol obscures more than it clarifies, it is removed.

03

S

If W proves sufficient, S becomes unnecessary.

04

Authority

No author, tradition or community is exempt from revision.

Where certainty ends

The boundary is not where
inquiry fails.

It is where inquiry becomes honest.

We can trust evidence without pretending it has said more than it has. We can preserve a question without decorating it with answers. We can live with hope without calling hope proof.
